By the end of this module you can…

• Ask permission, and say what you’re about to do before every touch.
• Give short, clear instructions: breathe in, open your mouth, lie down, sit up, squeeze, follow my finger.
• Offer a gown, a chaperone and privacy, and respect the patient’s modesty.
• Reassure honestly, without promising what you can’t yet know.
• Say what you found in plain words, and stop the exam when something can’t wait.

1. 现在我给您检查一下身体，可以吗？Xiàn zài wǒ gěi nín jiǎn chá yí xià shēn tǐ, kě yǐ ma?Now I’d like to examine you. Is that OK?
2. 请您换上这件检查服，开口在后面。Qǐng nín huàn shàng zhè jiàn jiǎn chá fú, kāi kǒu zài hòu miàn.Please change into this gown; it opens at the back.
3. 检查的时候会有一位护士在场，可以吗？Jiǎn chá de shí hou huì yǒu yí wèi hù shi zài chǎng, kě yǐ ma?A nurse will be in the room. Is that OK?
4. 我要按一下您的肚子，可以吗？可能会有一点不舒服。Wǒ yào àn yí xià nín de dù zi, kě yǐ ma? Kě néng huì yǒu yì diǎn bù shū fu.I’m going to press on your belly. Is that OK? It may be a little uncomfortable.
5. 疼的话随时告诉我，我会停下来。Téng de huà suí shí gào su wǒ, wǒ huì tíng xià lai.If it hurts, tell me and I’ll stop.
6. 请深呼吸，用嘴呼吸。Qǐng shēn hū xī, yòng zuǐ hū xī.Take deep breaths through your mouth.
7. 请张嘴，说“啊”。Qǐng zhāng zuǐ, shuō “a”.Open your mouth and say “ah.”
8. 请躺下，把腿弯起来。Qǐng tǎng xià, bǎ tuǐ wān qǐ lai.Lie down and bend your knees.
9. 眼睛跟着我的手指看，头不要动。Yǎn jing gēn zhe wǒ de shǒu zhǐ kàn, tóu bú yào dòng.Follow my finger with your eyes; keep your head still.
10. 好了，检查完了，您可以把衣服穿好。Hǎo le, jiǎn chá wán le, nín kě yǐ bǎ yī fu chuān hǎo.All done. You can get dressed.
