Who I am

This website is run by Chewy Wang, doing business as Chewy Mandarin (“I” or “me”). I teach Mandarin to healthcare professionals, and I’m based in Texas, in the United States. This notice explains what personal information the site collects, why I collect it, who else handles it, and the choices and rights you have, whether you live in the United States, Canada or elsewhere.

I am personally responsible for protecting your personal information, including as the person in charge of the protection of personal information under Quebec law. You can reach me here:

What I collect

• Contact form and email: your first name, email address and the message you write.
• Free Pocket Guide and Phrase of the Week: your first name and email address.
• Course feedback: if you rate a module or a course, your rating (helpful or not) and which module it is about, plus a note and your email address only if you choose to add them.
• Booking a session: when you book through the calendar on this site, you give your details (such as your name, email address, time zone and any notes) to Cal.com, which passes them on to me so I can hold the session.
• Payments: when you pay for a session, your card details go directly to Stripe. I never see or store your full card number. I receive a record of the payment, such as your name, email address, the amount and the date.
• Technical information: like most websites, the services that deliver this site can see your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. I use this only to keep the site working and secure, and to see overall visitor numbers.
• Visit statistics: I use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit, which pages they read, which website brought them here, what kind of device and browser they use, which country they are in, and how quickly pages load. It doesn’t use cookies or store anything on your device, and it doesn’t build a profile of you or follow you to other websites. I only ever see totals, never who you are.
• On your own device: the free courses remember your progress, your Knowledge Check scores, the name and role you type in for your practice scripts, the name you type on a certificate of completion, your game scores, streak, missed words and leaderboard nickname, the course you studied last, whether you have signed up for emails (so the courses stop asking), and whether you have rated a module (so each module asks only once), in your browser’s local storage. This stays on your device and is never sent to me, unless you make an account (below). You can clear it at any time in your browser settings.
• Accounts (optional): if you make an account to keep your progress on other devices, I store the username you make up, a scrambled form of your password and recovery phrase that can’t be turned back into them, and a copy of the course and game progress described above, which includes any name you typed for your practice scripts or on a certificate. I don’t ask for your email or your real name. Your password and recovery phrase are scrambled in your browser before they are sent, so I never see them.
• Games leaderboards: if you put a score on a leaderboard, I keep the nickname you type, the score, the game, the course and the date, and anyone visiting the Games page can see the nickname and score. To stop one person flooding the games, the server also keeps a scrambled code made from your IP address and a secret key. The code changes every day and can’t be turned back into your address. Rounds you don’t put on a leaderboard are deleted after about 3 days.

This site doesn’t set cookies of its own, except one sign-in cookie if you make an account and sign in, which keeps you signed in for up to 180 days (or until you sign out) and is used for nothing else. I don’t use advertising trackers. The visit statistics work without cookies. The Cal.com booking calendar may set its own cookies when you use it.

Please don’t send health information

Chewy Mandarin teaches language only. Please do not put patient names, patient details or anyone’s health information in the contact form, in a booking note or in an email to me. If you do, I will delete it where I can.

How I use your information

• To reply to your message or booking request.
• To read your course feedback, improve the courses and, if you ask, reply to you.
• To email you what you signed up for (the free Pocket Guide or the Phrase of the Week), then a weekly phrase and occasional emails about new lessons, courses and sessions (you can unsubscribe at any time).
• To run the sessions you book, including sending you the session link.
• To take payment for sessions and keep financial and tax records.
• To keep the site working, secure and free of spam.
• To see, in total, how the site is used (for example, which lessons are popular and how quickly pages load), so I can improve it.
• To meet legal obligations, such as keeping records or answering a lawful request.

I use your information only for these purposes, for others you agree to, or where the law requires or allows it. I do not sell your personal information, I do not share it with anyone for their own advertising, and I do not use it for targeted advertising.

Your consent

When you fill in a form on this site, you agree to my using your information for the purpose explained next to that form. You can withdraw your consent at any time, for example by unsubscribing or by asking me to delete your information. The only limits are legal ones, such as keeping payment records for tax purposes. If withdrawing means I can no longer do something for you, such as reply to your message, I will tell you.

Emails

When you ask for the Pocket Guide or sign up for the Phrase of the Week, MailerLite first asks you to confirm your email address, then sends you what you signed up for. After that, I may send you a weekly phrase and occasional emails about new lessons, courses and sessions. Every marketing email includes my name, my mailing address and an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing takes effect right away, and always within 10 business days, and I won’t send you marketing emails after that.

Who else handles your information

I use a few trusted services to run this site. They handle your information to provide their service to me, and each has its own privacy policy.

• Web3Forms delivers contact-form messages and course feedback to my email inbox and may keep a copy for a limited time.
• Facebook, Instagram and X run my social media pages under their own privacy policies. This site only links to them: it doesn’t load their buttons, scripts or trackers.
• MailerLite is the email service I use. When you request the Pocket Guide or sign up for the Phrase of the Week, it stores your name and email address, asks you to confirm your email, sends you what you signed up for and my occasional emails, and handles unsubscribes.
• Stripe processes card payments for paid sessions. It may also collect information to prevent fraud and to meet its legal obligations.
• Cal.com provides the booking calendar on this site and stores your booking details. Its embedded calendar may set its own cookies.
• Google: this site loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google’s servers, which can see your IP address. Coaching sessions are held on Google Meet.
• Cloudflare hosts this website and keeps standard server logs to deliver the site and protect it from attacks. It also provides the visit statistics described above (Cloudflare Web Analytics) and stores accounts and leaderboard scores.
• LinkedIn: if you use the “Add to LinkedIn profile” or “Share” button on a course certificate, your browser opens LinkedIn with the certificate’s title, date, ID and course link filled in. Nothing is added to your profile until you save it there, the name on your certificate isn’t sent, and I don’t receive any of it.

Because Cal.com’s calendar and Google Fonts load from their own servers, they can see technical information about your visit, such as your IP address, under their own privacy policies. Links to other sites, such as Preply or social media, lead to services with their own privacy practices. I may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety and rights of others.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

I don’t track you across other websites, sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising, so there is nothing for these browser signals to switch off. The site works the same way for everyone, whether or not your browser sends them.

How long I keep it

• Messages, course feedback and booking details: while we are in touch, and for up to 2 years after our last contact.
• Pocket Guide and Phrase of the Week sign-ups: until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete them. After you unsubscribe, MailerLite keeps your email address on a do-not-email list so that you aren’t emailed again.
• Accounts: until you delete your account, which you can do yourself at any time on the account page. Deleting it removes the username, the password and phrase, and the saved progress right away.
• Leaderboard scores: for as long as the Games page runs its leaderboards. To have a nickname and its scores removed, contact me.
• Payment and tax records: as long as tax law requires, usually up to 7 years.

After that, I delete the information or make it anonymous. If you ask me to delete your information sooner, I will do so within 30 days, unless the law requires me to keep it.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask me to:

• tell you what personal information I hold about you, how I use it and who I have shared it with;
• give you a copy of it, in a commonly used electronic format if you ask;
• correct it if it is wrong or incomplete;
• delete it; and
• stop emailing you (you can also use the unsubscribe link in any email).

Your request is free. I will reply within 30 days; if I need longer, I will tell you why within those 30 days. To protect your information, I may first need to confirm it’s you, usually by replying to the email address I have for you. I will not treat you differently for using any of these rights. Depending on where you live (for example California, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom), you may have further rights, such as objecting to or restricting how your information is used.

If you have a concern, please contact me first and I will try to put it right. You can also complain to a privacy regulator: in Canada, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or your provincial commissioner (in Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information); in the United States, your state attorney general or the Federal Trade Commission; in Europe or the United Kingdom, your local data protection authority.

Security

Information sent through this site’s forms travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. No method of sending or storing information online is completely secure, so I can’t promise absolute security, but I take reasonable steps to protect what you share with me. If a breach involving your personal information creates a real risk of significant harm to you, I will tell you as soon as possible and report it to the authorities where the law requires.

Children

This site is for adults, especially healthcare professionals and students. It is not directed to children, and I do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. Paid sessions are for adults aged 18 and over. If you believe a child has sent me personal information, please contact me and I will delete it.

Where your information is processed

I’m based in the United States, and my service providers store and process information in the United States and other countries. If you live outside the United States, including in Canada, your information will be handled under the laws of those countries, and their courts, law enforcement and national security authorities may be able to access it.

Changes to this notice

I may update this notice from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed. If I make an important change, I will say so on this page and, if you are on my email list, I may also email you.

About these terms

These terms apply when you book a session with me, use the free courses or use this website. I am Chewy Wang, doing business as Chewy Mandarin (“I” or “me”), and I’m based in Texas, in the United States. By booking a session or using this site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t book. You can print or save this page for your records.

What I provide

I teach Mandarin as a language. My sessions, courses and materials are for language learning only. They are not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and I am not a medical interpreting or translation service. Nothing I teach replaces your workplace’s interpreter policy or a qualified medical interpreter, and you should always follow your facility’s rules when communicating with patients.

I can’t promise particular results, such as a test score or fluency, because progress depends on your practice.

Booking and payment

• Sessions are booked through an online calendar provided by Cal.com. Your confirmation email shows the date, time and price, with a link to cancel or reschedule. Please keep it as your record of the booking.
• Paid sessions are paid for by card when you book, and payments are processed by Stripe. Prices are in US dollars and are shown before you pay. The price shown is the full price: I don’t add booking or service fees. If sales tax ever applies, it will be shown before you pay.
• If your card isn’t in US dollars, your bank may charge a currency conversion or foreign transaction fee. That fee is set by your bank, not by me.
• Each booking is for one session. There are no subscriptions, and you are never charged automatically for future sessions.
• The free 15-minute pronunciation audit costs nothing.
• Sessions are held online on Google Meet. The link is in your confirmation email. You are responsible for a working internet connection, camera and microphone.

Canceling and rescheduling

• If you cancel or reschedule at least 1 calendar day before your session, you can change the time at no cost or receive a full refund. Cal.com counts by calendar date, not by a full 24 hours, so canceling any time on the day before your session still qualifies.
• Cancellations made on the same calendar date as your session, and missed sessions, are not refunded.
• If you haven’t joined within 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, I will count the session as a no-show and end it. No-shows are not refunded.
• If you join late, the session still ends at its scheduled time.
• If I need to cancel, or a technical problem on my side stops the session, you choose: a new time or a full refund.
• To cancel or reschedule, use the link in your confirmation email.

Refunds

When a refund is due, I issue it promptly, and always within 15 days. Refunds go back to the card you paid with, through Stripe. Depending on your bank, the refund usually appears within 5 to 10 business days after I issue it.

Patient privacy

Please don’t share real patient names, records or health information in sessions, in booking notes or in messages to me. When we practice clinical conversations, we will use made-up examples. My Privacy Notice explains how I handle your own information.

Recordings

I won’t record a session without your permission. Please don’t record, or share a recording of, a session without mine.

The free courses

The self-paced courses and games are free, and you don’t need an account to use them. Your progress is saved in your own browser, and clearing your browser data erases it. If you make an optional account, a copy of your progress is kept with it so it follows you to other devices. I may add, update or retire lessons at any time.

Certificates of completion. When you pass a module’s Knowledge Check, the course makes a certificate of completion for you, in your browser, from your own progress and the name you type on it. It shows that you completed a self-paced language course. It is not a license, a language-proficiency credential or continuing-education credit, and it doesn’t qualify you to interpret for patients. I don’t keep official records of certificates, so I can’t verify, replace or reissue them. Please use your real name, and only claim certificates you have earned.

Accounts and games

Accounts are optional. Because they don’t use an email address, your password and recovery phrase are the only way into your account: please keep them safe. If you lose both, I can’t get the account back for you. Leaderboards are just for fun and carry no prizes. Please choose a username and nickname that isn’t offensive and isn’t someone else’s name. I may remove nicknames, scores or accounts that break these terms, that look automated or that I reasonably believe are cheating, and I may reset the leaderboards or change the games at any time.

Free resources and course materials

The Pocket Guide, lessons, images, audio and other materials on this site are © Chewy Mandarin. You may use them for your own learning. Please don’t copy, sell, post or share them without my written permission. Sharing a link to this website is always welcome.

Respectful conduct

Sessions are for adults aged 18 and over. I may end a session or decline future bookings if someone behaves in an abusive or unsafe way.

Limits of my responsibility

If you live in Quebec: the limits in this section do not apply to you where Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act doesn’t allow them.

I provide language instruction with reasonable care, but I can’t guarantee that this site or its materials will always be available or free of errors. To the fullest extent the law allows, I am not responsible for indirect or consequential losses, and my total responsibility for any claim connected to a session or to these materials is limited to the amount you paid me for that session. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under the law that cannot be limited. You are responsible for how you use what you learn in your own work.

Your consumer rights and complaints

If something goes wrong, please contact me first. Most problems can be sorted out quickly. You keep every right that the consumer protection laws of your state, province or territory give you, and nothing in these terms takes those rights away. These terms don’t require arbitration and don’t stop you from going to court, including small claims court. You can also contact your local consumer protection office.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas and applicable US federal law. If you are a consumer living somewhere else, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws where you live.

Changes to these terms

I may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows the latest version. The version in effect when you book applies to that booking.
