By the end of this module you can…

• Explain honestly and kindly that vision can’t be fully restored, and involve family with the patient’s consent.
• Suggest low-vision aids for everyday tasks, give home safety tips, and explain a referral to low vision rehab.
• Talk about driving: the doctor advises, the DMV (in Canada, the provincial licensing office) decides, and the rules vary by state and province.
• Set a follow-up plan: when to come back, what to bring, and what means calling right away.
• Decline gifts warmly, guide a patient to the door, and say goodbye.

1. 您愿意让孙女一起听吗？Nín yuàn yì ràng sūn nǚ yì qǐ tīng ma?Would you like your granddaughter to listen too?
2. 您中间的视力很难完全恢复，但是还有很多办法能帮您。Nín zhōng jiān de shì lì hěn nán wán quán huī fù, dàn shì hái yǒu hěn duō bàn fǎ néng bāng nín.Your central vision is hard to restore, but a lot can help.
3. 您平时最想看清楚的是什么？Nín píng shí zuì xiǎng kàn qīng chu de shì shén me?What do you most want to see clearly?
4. 看报纸可以试试放大镜，灯光要亮一点。Kàn bào zhǐ kě yǐ shì shi fàng dà jìng, dēng guāng yào liàng yì diǎn.For the paper: a magnifier, and brighter light.
5. 我帮您转到低视力门诊。Wǒ bāng nín zhuǎn dào dī shì lì mén zhěn.I’ll refer you to the low vision clinic.
6. 楼梯边上贴一条颜色鲜亮的胶带。Lóu tī biān shang tiē yì tiáo yán sè xiān liàng de jiāo dài.Bright tape on the edges of the stairs.
7. 医生会给您建议，最后由车管局决定。Yī shēng huì gěi nín jiàn yì, zuì hòu yóu chē guǎn jú jué dìng.The doctor advises; the DMV decides.
8. 三个月以后回来复查，请带上正在用的眼药水。Sān ge yuè yǐ hòu huí lai fù chá, qǐng dài shang zhèng zài yòng de yǎn yào shuǐ.Back in three months: bring your eye drops.
9. 看东西突然变差，马上打电话给我们。Kàn dōng xi tū rán biàn chà, mǎ shàng dǎ diàn huà gěi wǒ men.Vision suddenly worse: call us right away.
10. 一只眼睛突然看不见，或者脸歪、手脚没力气，马上打911。Yì zhī yǎn jing tū rán kàn bu jiàn, huò zhě liǎn wāi, shǒu jiǎo méi lì qi, mǎ shàng dǎ jiǔ yāo yāo.Sudden loss in one eye, a drooping face or a weak limb: 911.
11. 您的心意我领了，红包真的不能收。Nín de xīn yì wǒ lǐng le, hóng bāo zhēn de bù néng shōu.Thank you, but I can’t accept a red envelope.
